On Friday, May 14, 2010, my sweet grandmother went home to be with her Lord and Savior as well as her husband of 72 1/2 years and two of her children. We wouldn't wish her back, but we miss her very much. Her homegoing celebration was a mix of tears and laughter. It was comforting to us for some of her children to share special stories of her impact on their lives. She touched so many people. As a grandchild, I know my memories are quite different from those of her children. She was a long-distance Grandma until I was about 14 as she and Grandpa lived in Michigan. At that time, they moved to Illinois to retire. Through some unforeseen circumstances, they came out of retirement to pastor our church on an interim basis. Suddenly, we saw each other on a regular basis and became very close. We shared many meals around my parents' table. With that came many stories and much laughter. Grandma was a great listener and was always interested in whatever I had to say. She was right beside me cheering me on with each milestone in my life. She was definitely one of my balcony people! She was also there to weep with me when sorrow came into my life. She was a true friend to me and I will miss her so much. She was bedridden for the last few weeks of her life. The last time I talked to her, when she was aware of her surroundings, I told her that I loved her and kissed her on her cheek. As I walked away I heard her saying something to her caregiver. I walked back to see what she had said and she was telling her caregiver, "I'm so glad she loves me." Grandma, I loved you more than you know. I'll see you again soon on that glad reunion day!
